Unlike mattresses built on fully automated lines, Stearns & Foster® mattresses are hand-tufted and hand-finished by trained craftspeople at Tempur Sealy manufacturing facilities in the United States. Hand-tufting pulls the layers of a mattress tightly together at set intervals, which helps keep foam and fiber layers from shifting over time and gives the mattress its tailored, structured look.

Stearns & Foster® was founded in 1846 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by George S. Stearns and Seth C. Foster. The partnership began by producing fine cotton wadding and upholstery for horse carriages before moving into cotton-filled bedding. Their early mattresses were sold primarily to high-end hotels, establishing the brand's long association with luxury hospitality-grade sleep products.

In 1880, the company relocated its manufacturing to Lockland, Ohio, where it operated for more than a century and became one of the area's major employers. Stearns & Foster is frequently cited as the oldest American-owned and operated bedding manufacturer still in business today.

In 1993, Stearns & Foster® merged with Sealy, becoming Sealy's high-end luxury mattress line. Sealy and Stearns & Foster are today part of Tempur Sealy International, Inc., the same parent company behind Tempur-Pedic®. This is why several Stearns & Foster collections feature TEMPUR-Indulge™ memory foam developed by Tempur-Pedic's sleep science team.

A signature tradition still practiced today: every Stearns & Foster mattress is signed by the individual craftsperson who built it, a nod to the brand's roots in hand-tufted, small-batch upholstery work.
